On April 28th 1997, my son Cam was born. As countless awe inspired parents have done before me, I imagined what he might become: Did he have the fingers to be a violinist or ‘cellist? the lips for the trumpet, French horn or oboe. All idle dreams of course, he will be what he will be (probably an accountant I hope!).
These six pieces are all inspired by my son Cam, at the age of 6 months.
6 months on, he sits on my knee at the piano and plays the drums on the keys; there is definately a sense of rhythm there….I think!
- The 1st began life as a cheeky little idea…
- His 1st doodling was a very calm and serene melody, which became the lullaby
- Cam in more percussive mode began Sync or Swim
- His most recent ‘accessible’ improvisation forms the basis of the final piece – which is also the most technically demanding
As with all the pieces here, once you’ve sorted out the finger patterns, they’re really quite straightforward.
I orchestrated Cams music and included it on my album Row of Ashes (the titles have changed but the music is all there). I’m thinking of making the backing tracks for available for students to play along to. What do you think? Please leave a comment
